OSMOND RESOURCES (an Australian company focused on accelerating the development of EU Critical Minerals Projects) has made a significant discovery in a municipality of Andalucia. This discovery could revolutionize the mining of rare mineral in Spain and Europe. The Jaen region could become the largest mineral deposit on the continent. It contains rare earths, titanium, and many other important minerals.

Jaen is home to rare earth elements

Minerals such as zirconium, hafnium and other minerals are found in large concentrations within the deposit. These minerals are strategic to the European Union because they play a key role in technology and energy transition, and in particular, the production of components used in renewable energies.

These elements are essential for:

  • Modern technology such as mobiles phones, TVs, laptops, and electric cars.
  • The EU’s focus over the last two decades has been on the development and widespread integration renewable energy.
  • Stabilisation of the prices of the products mentioned above (if these can be produced locally, then there is less dependence on imported goods, specifically from China).
  • Other fields include medicine, ceramics and aerospace engineering.

Jaen is championing the Spanish Rare Elements Project

Osmond Resources in Melbourne, Australia is leading the Orion EU Critical Minerals Project in the southern part of Spain. This project has been a major EU exploration mission for over a year. Initial drilling and sample collection done in the project showed very promising results. Jaen has become an essential province to explore and collect these rare earth elements. Osmond Resources currently conducts research at 288 Spanish mine sites.

These essential materials have also been found in Aldeaquemada, Castellar, Montizón, and Santisteban del Puerto.

What is the impact on the average person?

The immediate and wider population of Spain could benefit from this breakthrough in Jaen:

  • Prices for phones, TVs, laptops etc. have been stabilised and in some cases even reduced.
  • There are more jobs available for the population.
  • Long-term reduction of climate change.
  • Economic stability in Spain

The emergence of rare elements can be beneficial for Jaen as well as Spain, but mining them could do harm to the surrounding environment, destroy nearby land (including farms), and put native animals in danger. For the extraction of precious elements in Jaen, it is important to have the right permissions and execute the process with care. This will cause the least damage possible to the environment, people, and animals.
