At least one person was killed when a train derailed on Tuesday near Barcelona.
According to reports from the local media, a train that was running on the R4 route of Barcelona’s Rodalies commuter rail network crashed into a brick wall between Gelida-Sant Sadurni.
After heavy rain, the retaining wall collapsed on the railway track. The area is under a persistent weather warning from Storm Harry.
Catalan police confirmed that the driver was killed in this accident which happened at around 9pm local.
According to emergency services at least twenty other people were injured, several of whom were seriously.
Eleven ambulances and over 30 firefighter crews have been sent to the scene of the accident in Gelida, Catalunya – located around 35km west of Barcelona.
The R4 rail line is closed while the authorities clear the debris and investigate the incident.
Two days earlier, two high-speed trains had derailed at Adamuz in Cordoba in one of the worst rail accidents in Spain’s history.
At least 42 deaths are reported after carriages of an Iryo service bound for Madrid with over 300 passengers crossed an adjacent line, colliding with a train heading to Huelva.
