He added, “We’re growing at the rate and in the manner that we think is best for triple sustainability, economic, social and environmental.”
While the UK visitor numbers are up over last year, France, Germany and other countries have decreased.
Spain is expecting to receive more foreign tourists and to see them spend more this year.
Hereu stated: “If the growth continues this coming year, we could reach 100 million tourists from abroad, but that is not our focus.”
Spain is the second most visited country in the world after France. Tourism is a major revenue source for the Spanish economy, which grew faster than its European counterparts over the last two years.
According to the tourism industry lobby ExcelturThe sector is expected to account for approximately 13% in Spain’s GDP by 2025.
Hereu reported that the authorities expected a 3,7% increase in international visitors to 26 millions people in the first four month of this current year.
Spending projections are around €35 billion, up 2.5% from the same period last year.
Hereu claimed that Spain was moving away seasonality as the data showed that tourism spending had increased by 53 percent in the low- and midseasons, compared to pre-pandemic 2019, and 34% in high season.
Minister said that two thirds of tourists visiting Spain in 2025 plan to return, as they view it as a secure place.
