Guardia Civil has arrested a 53-year-old lorry driver on the A-7 near Alcoy after a roadside check found he was driving over the alcohol limit, despite being banned from driving and wanted on an outstanding prison warrant.
The stop was carried out by traffic officers on the motorway in Alicante province. Once they checked the driver’s paperwork and ran his details through police databases, they found he had a court ban on driving that was still in force until 2028.
Officers also discovered a judicial warrant ordering his arrest and imprisonment over previous road safety offences. The driver was taken into custody and later sent to prison by a judge.
Check revealed more than a drink-drive offence
The Guardia Civil said the case began as a routine traffic inspection, but the checks quickly uncovered a more serious situation. According to the force, the man was not only under the influence of alcohol, but was also driving while disqualified and subject to a prison order.
Traffic officers requested support from Guardia Civil colleagues from Muro de Alcoy to complete the arrest and take the driver to official premises.
Authorities said the intervention prevented a potentially dangerous vehicle from continuing on one of the province’s main road corridors.
Sent to prison after court appearance
After being transferred to police facilities, the driver was put before the relevant court in Alcoy, which ordered him remanded in prison.
The Guardia Civil highlighted the importance of roadside checks, saying they can uncover both dangerous driving and people wanted by the justice system.
