A prisoner at Puerto III injured a prison officer after allegedly pretending to suffer a seizure and then launching a surprise attack during a transfer to a secure area, according to the CSIF union.
The incident happened on Saturday morning and left one member of staff with injuries that required a plaster cast on one arm, an open wound to the wrist and several bruises, the union said.
Attack during a routine transfer
CSIF said the inmate was being moved after appearing unwell when he suddenly grabbed an officer by the throat. Other staff then stepped in to restrain him.
According to the union, the same prisoner had also tried to assault the prison doctor the previous day. He has since been placed in isolation.
Union calls for stricter measures
CSIF has asked prison authorities to review the inmate’s prison classification and move him from second grade to first grade, the most restrictive category, saying the decision is needed to protect staff.
The union also wants him transferred to another prison. It said the attack underlined the pressure on staff at a centre which, according to recent Interior Ministry figures, is one of the most overcrowded prisons in Spain and has recorded one of the highest numbers of assaults on staff.
Recent reporting on prison violence in the area has also highlighted similar concerns at other centres, including earlier coverage of this same incident and wider staff safety issues at nearby prisons.
