Five juveniles remanded in secure detention over riot case

Five minors detained during the violent unrest in Barcelona on 24 October have been remanded to secure detention centres, as youth courts continue to process the cases linked to the disorder.

The decision comes after a fortnight in which youth court divisions in the city have reviewed the status of underage suspects arrested during the clashes. According to the latest court balance, 79 minors have now appeared before judges.

The case is part of the wider inquiry into the unrest that spread through central Barcelona after a Blocus call, and follows an earlier remand decision in the same investigation. Earlier this week, a judge also ordered one suspect held without bail as the courts began dealing with the most serious allegations first.

Of the minors brought before the judiciary so far, 32 have been placed on probation with orders barring them from attending public demonstrations. Another 30 were released on standard probation, while two left court without any precautionary measures.

The youth court judges have been working through the cases in stages, starting with the most urgent matters that fell within the legal 48-hour window for holding minors in custody before custody decisions had to be made.

The unrest on 24 October led to extensive damage in the city centre, with shops vandalised and police officers injured during the clashes. The latest court figures show that the legal response is still ongoing, with all the minors detained in connection with the disorder now having appeared before the youth courts.

Police response and court review

The wider police operation in Barcelona also continued over the weekend, with officers carrying out stop-and-checks and issuing fines for carrying dangerous weapons as authorities tried to prevent further trouble.

Security around the city had already been stepped up after the original disturbances, which triggered a large-scale response from the regional police and the Guardia Urbana. The court process is now focusing on the individual role of each suspect in the unrest rather than the general disorder itself.
