Guardia Civil officers are investigating after the body of a man was found floating near Fuentepiedra beach in Almuñécar on the Granada coast on Monday morning.
The man was wearing a wetsuit when he was spotted shortly after 9am by someone walking along the shore, according to the report. The witness alerted the Local Police, who went to the scene along with Guardia Civil officers.
Sources quoted by EFE said the body showed no obvious signs of violence. A post-mortem will now determine how the man died and whether further forensic tests are needed to identify him.
The body was recovered from the water with the help of a Local Police officer and another person who was in the area. They used a paddle board to bring the body closer to shore before it was handed over to investigators.
The Guardia Civil judicial police unit in Almuñécar has taken charge of the inquiry.
What investigators know so far
At this stage, officials have not said where the man came from or how long he may have been in the water. The investigation remains open pending the results of the autopsy.
