Fuengirola’s local museum will hold a summer Olympic Legend display from Friday, July 17 until Wednesday, August 26, with free entry to an exhibition celebrating iconic heroes and memorabilia from sporting history.
Free local tributes with three local names
Fuengirola Town Council has organised the exhibition as part of the “Fuengirola Olímpica” (Olympic Fuengirola) programme, delivered in partnership with Museo del Deporte (Sports Museum), a Madrid-based nonprofit founded in 2008 that has displayed around 70 touring shows across Spain since 2016.
Fuengirola is recognized for its own sporting history. Teresa Zabell is at the top of the list. Born in Ipswich and raised in Fuengirola, she began sailing in her hometown aged 10 and has won Olympic Gold twice in Barcelona and Atlanta.
Juan Gomez, “Juanito”, represents football and not Olympic competition. He was born in Fuengirola, Spain in 1954. In ten seasons he won five league titles, two UEFA Cups and 121 goals.
Maria de Valdes, the most recent Olympic connection to the exhibition. Open-water swimmer born in Fuengirola competed at Paris 2024 in the 10km race after winning silver at the World Championships of 2024 in Doha. In her honour, the town named its annual swimming competition Travesia de Nado.
Olympic Torches are proudly displayed
The collection includes a genuine Olympic torch from Paris 2024. The Museo del Deporte’s touring exhibitions usually revolve around this theme. Previous events featured torches from Mexico 1968 to the most recent Games.
Museo de la Ciudad, Calle Maria Josefa Llarrucea in Fuengirola is a great place to learn about sports heroes while escaping the heat of summer. Fuengirola Town Hall has further details on their website. You can also call them at 952589349.
