Before booking a trip to Spain for the May bank holiday in 2026, check out the map. Galicia and northern Spain could experience persistent rain from 1 to the 3 of May. The south and Mediterranean coast are likely to have more sunny and calmer conditions. This year’s Labour Day falls on a weekend, giving millions of people a long holiday. It is one of the most popular early spring travel breaks.

What does it mean? Weather Could influence where people go, how much they spend, and whether they choose to stay at home, or head for the beach, or city breaks?

The forecast is a product of Jorge Rey, has provided an early outlook on the start of may. Official forecasts will be more accurate closer to May. However, the first signs already indicate a familiar Spanish division between sunnier eastern regions and wetter Atlantic areas.

Rain expected in Galicia and Northern Spain

The current forecast is not good for travellers headed to the North West.

Galicia, and parts of Cantabrian coastline could be subject to persistent rains during the holiday weekends. This includes areas where people visit for the green landscapes, seafood and coastal drives.

Cities such as Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, A Coruña, Santander and Bilbao may therefore face damp conditions just as hotels and roads become busier.

It is not uncommon for rain to fall in this area during the spring, but timing is important. A wet Monday is one thing. Wet weekends are not the same as a wet Tuesday.

Families looking to take a short holiday often prefer outdoor activities, scenic excursions, and dining on the terrace. Many plans are changed if rain is forecast for several days.

This does not mean that the north is to be avoided. The north is not to be avoided.

Central Spain can experience mixed spring weather

The middle of the nation may be somewhere between. In some areas of the country, cloudier skies can be expected. There is a possibility for scattered showers instead of continuous rain. This can often mean a day of mixed weather, with sunny spells being followed by showers.

Madrid and the surrounding areas could experience exactly this kind of unsettling spring pattern.

Packing for the capital can be a good idea, but it is better to avoid extremes. On the same trip, a light jacket, sunglasses, and an umbrella all make sense.

Spring in Spain. Conditions can quickly change, especially in the interior where heat during the day can cause afternoon instability.

There is good news for the Mediterranean region and south

The early forecast is better for those looking to experience a more traditional holiday.

During the same weekend, weather conditions may be more stable in parts of southern and eastern Spain. This could be beneficial to destinations like Alicante and Valencia, Murcia, Malaga, and other parts of Andalusia where people flock for golf, sun, beaches or a short break.

Many travellers prefer mild temperatures to intense heat. This is the perfect time of year to visit Spain. It is warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities, but not too hot.

Early May can be a good time to travel if you are an expat, a retiree or merely avoiding the heat of August and July.

Spain has multiple seasons in one year

These forecasts are important because Spain rarely has a single weather story. One part of Spain can experience rain and temperatures as low as 15C, while another region may enjoy sunshine and temperatures up to 26C.

The Atlantic system tends to hit the west and north first, while the Mediterranean is usually calmer for longer. The inland areas will then react differently due to altitude and temperature fluctuations.

That is why broad headlines about ‘Spain weather’ can be misleading. The right week is often more important than the right area.

What can happen after a bank holiday?

Early trends for the days to come suggest further fronts will continue to move in from the West.

The eastern coast areas will remain dry, but Extremadura or western Andalusia could see rain later. Storms can also be expected in the central zone during the second week in May, especially if warmer air is building inland.

This is a typical behaviour for late spring, and not something unusual.

May is a month of transition. Summer begins to emerge, and then disappears briefly again.

What travellers need to do now

It is not a good idea to cancel plans because of a forecast that will be in the future. If you’re booking right now, this is a useful guide.

The Mediterranean Coast and southern parts of Spain are currently the better bet if dry weather is your priority. You can still visit northern Spain if you enjoy its food, scenery, and cool climate. Just plan your trip around the possibility of showers.

The best of Spain’s trips are often made in poor weather. A rainy lunch in San Sebastián or a cloudy walk in Galicia can still beat staying at home.

Early verdict

It is easy to see the picture at this point. North and north-west Spain may have more rain. Central areas can be mixed. It may be that the south and east have it best. With millions of people planning to go on vacation, this difference is more important than ever.
