The Lyrids meteor shower is the oldest known meteor shower visible today. Chinese astronomers described them as “stars falling like rain” in 687 BCE. This exact display has been seen by people for more than 2,700 years.
The meteors we will see tonight are actually tiny grains of “space dust” Comet C/1861G1 Thatcher. This comet will take 415 year to orbit the Sun once. Last seen by Earth was 1861. It won’t be seen again until the year 227. Every April, we still walk along its “trash-trail” even though the comet has long since disappeared.
The best places to view the stars You will be far from the built-up areas, where there is less lighting and fewer obstructions. There is no danger in viewing the shooting stars. Look towards the constellation Lyra and the bright Vega near the Lyra star.
