A security guard at Puerto Banus marina in Marbella acted quickly to save the life of a boat owner who collapsed into the water after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Rescue at Puerto Banus

A number of boat owners nearby rushed to rescue the man. The rescuers struggled with his build and left him in the water more than 10 minutes.

Óscar Toledano, a security guard and team supervisor working for Prosegur at the marina, received an emergency alert while outside the office. In recalling the incident he said it was not possible to take his time because every second determined whether the victim would survive.

Later, medical staff confirmed the man’s arrest was caused by a cardiorespiratory event rather than drowning. Toledano returned to the victim quickly and attached the device after quickly collecting one of the marina’s defibrillators. He performed cardiopulmonary rescue while waiting for the paramedics.

CPR and a defibrillator saved the victim

Soon after the intervention started, there were signs of recovery. Toledano reported that the man tried to breathe again and began to release water from his lips before the emergency crews got to Puerto Banus. The doctors thanked the guard later for stabilising and calming the patient.

Later, family members visited the marina to thank staff. Relatives confirmed the man’s condition was stable and that he had started joking around with his family members during recovery.

The rescue was made possible by training in CPR, emergency response and CPR. Prosegur noted that quick intervention and defibrillators are crucial in life-threatening circumstances.
