Catalan TV pundits incite outrage after celebrating Real Madrid’s Champions League exit.

The dramatic Champions League defeat of Bayern Munich by REAL Madrid sparked celebrations far beyond Germany. Catalan TV pundits ignited controversy with their celebrations.

After Bayern’s 94th minute winner, the commentators on TV3’s late-night sports programme Onze cheered ‘Gol’ and danced around the studio with a traffic cone.

On social media, fans were outraged by the tone and content of the report.

One user commented: “I don’t want my money used for such a thing.”

Other posters questioned the appropriateness of such behaviour on a public broadcaster. One comment read: “This shouldn’t be allowed in public TV.” The public broadcaster is not meant to be an event.”

One user stated: “Those journalist are idiots.” Media and fans are not on the same level. You won’t hear that on Telemadrid, when Barcelona loses.”

However, some viewers defended the pundits explaining that Catalans have to hear anti-Barcelona and anti-Cataluyna chants at ‘85 per cent of Spanish stadiums’.

Real Madrid and Barcelona FC’s ‘El Clasico’ rivalry has long-represented far more than a football game explaining the heated reactions on both sides.

The rivalry between Real Madrid FC and Barcelona FC has taken on an important political and symbolic significance. Real Madrid FC is often associated as the Spanish establishment and a symbol for Catalan identity.

Wild scenes erupted after Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid in a thrilling thriller 4-3 at Bayern’s Allianz Stadium.

Bayern defeated Real 6-4 overall, ending their Champions League quest.

This is the first time since 2004 that the team has not made it to the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid players were seen surrounding the referee when Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who was dismissed in the 86th minutes, was sent off.

Arda Guler was given another red card after his reaction.

Alvaro Arbeloa, Madrid manager, said his team was ‘really upset and really angry’ over Camavinga’s red card.
