Marbella in the running to host T100 Triathlon World Tour with mixed reactions from locals

Marbella has mixed feelings about hosting the T100 Triathlon World Tour.

Marbella is aiming to be on the T100 Triathlon World Tour schedule from 2027-2029. It has now signed an official agreement with Spanish Triathlon Federation. This will take three seasons to achieve.

What is the T100 Triathlon World Tour Tour?

The Triathlon World Tour, a joint venture of World Triathlon (WT) and Professional Triathletes Organisations (PTO), will launch in 2027. It will be the premier global series for the sport. Each race is 100km long. The T100 and T50 races will be crowned by the world’s only official champions after a 2km swim, an 80km bike ride and a 18km run.

Marbella is a strong contender for the international bid because only iconic destinations around the globe are being planned.

World champions bid back on their own bets

Marbella was backed by a high-profile group of supporters at the Madrid signing ceremony. Jose Hidalgo is the president of Spain’s Triathlon Federation. He was joined at the signing ceremony in Madrid by Antonio Fernandez Aimany who is the president of the International Triathlon Federation. Mario Mola a three-time World Triathlon Series World Champion and one of Spain’s most celebrated athletes, also attended.

Both federation heads praised Marbella’s track record and called it a strong, credible contender that should be part of this circuit right from the start.

CV – Six years IRONMAN experience

Six years in a row, Marbella has hosted an IRONMAN 70.3 race, including the World Championship. This record demonstrates the city’s ability to organize and deliver major endurance races at the highest levels.

Residents’ reactions are mixed

Not everyone celebrates without reservations. Social media reactions have been positive in general, but some residents are using this news to demand action at home. One commenter asked the council to “sort out Marbella’s traffic chaos” before congratulating the council. Another questioned whether the investment would benefit youth sports and local schools, saying that the road conditions in the town made him reluctant for children to cycle.
