Are you planning to visit the Costa del Sol in summer? Here are the most common roads to encounter speed cameras

You’ve just landed at Málaga Airport, collected the hire car and loaded the suitcases into the boot. Your sat-nav tells you that Marbella is only an hour away. The holiday playlist has been started and your trip to southern Spain is finally underway.

Then, comes the first speeding camera sign. Then, a few kilometers later, another speed camera sign appears. Another one appears.

If it feels as though there are speed cameras everywhere in Andalucía, you’re not imagining it. This region is home to more speed camera than any other area in Spain. And with the millions of holidaymakers who are expected to hit the road over the next weeks, there’s a higher chance of you passing one.

Visitors shouldn’t be nervous or spend the entire journey looking at the speedometer. It is important to know where cameras are the most common, and why so many people receive fines for driving on what they thought would be a normal holiday.

Why Andalucía has become Spain’s speed camera hotspot

The motorways leading to the Costa del Sol fill with tourists heading to beach resorts, while inland routes become busier with people exploring white villages, natural parks and historic cities such as Granada, Córdoba and Seville.

The Directorate General of Traffic in Spain (DGT) is concerned about the traffic increase.DGT) pays close attention to the region.

According to the latest figures, Andalucía has 430 speed cameras, the highest total of any autonomous community. These include mobile enforcement points, fixed cameras and average speed cameras spread throughout all eight provinces.

In Spain, around 2,200 cameras are installed, which include 1,310 fixed cameras, 706 mobile cameras and 18 average speed cameras. Almost one in every five is located in Andalucía.

This doesn’t mean all roads are dotted with cameras. However, drivers will be more likely to see one than they would expect on a normal holiday trip.

Where tourists are most likely see cameras

If you’re flying into Málaga, chances are your first drive will be along the A-7 Mediterranean motorway. It’s one of the busiest routes on Spain’s southern coast, linking Málaga with resorts including Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona and beyond.

Unsurprisingly, this is also a corridor where average and fixed speed cameras are prominent.

The A-45, which connects Málaga with Córdoba, is another route with several enforcement points, while the A-92, stretching across much of Andalucía, is regularly used by drivers travelling between Málaga, Granada, Seville and Almería.

Not only the major autoways deserve our attention.

Most visitors believe that they won’t encounter speed enforcement once they leave the highway. The DGT also deploys cameras on secondary roads. These include those leading to popular tourist locations and rural areas with frequently changing speed limits.

This means that a scenic route through the mountains, or a shortcut leading to a secret beach, can be monitored just as closely as a busy dual-carriageway.

The provinces with the highest number of speed cameras are Seville and Cádiz, both with 68, followed by Málaga with 59, Jaén with 50, Granada with 49, Huelva with 46, and Córdoba and Almería, each with 45.

Multiple enforcement zones are not unusual for tourists who visit several provinces on a single trip.

Most common mistakes made by visitors

Most speeding tickets are not the result of drivers racing on motorways. They are more likely to occur when visitors don’t know the Spanish road system.

The speed limit can change rapidly as you approach towns, traffic circles or roadworks. It is easy to drive at motorway speeds for a few seconds longer without realizing the new limit.

A common mistake is to assume that there is nothing to be concerned about if you don’t see a fixed camera.

Mobile cameras do not work that way.

Because they are mobile, unlike fixed installations, the DGT can identify long stretches along the road. This makes them harder to predict.

Also, drivers tend to relax when they get close to the accommodation. It’s easy to ignore speed signs after a long flight and focus instead on finding your hotel or holiday home.

Ironically, it’s usually when the concentration drops that you notice.

Avoid an expensive reminder following your holiday

No one wants to come home to find a speeding ticket waiting for them.

You can still be fined if you drive a rental. The rental companies will be able to identify the driver at the time, and they may charge an administrative fee.

Simple solutions are the best way to prevent problems.

Consider every change to the speed limit, no matter how small it may seem. Be careful when you leave motorways, enter built-up areas or drive on unfamiliar rural roads. Speed limits can often change more than visitors expect.

You can use a satellite navigation system to stay informed of any changes in speed limits. However, roadside signs are always the most important.

Spain’s Traffic Authority says that speed cameras were installed to improve road security, not catch unaware tourists. Whether you’re spending a week on the Costa del Sol, exploring Andalucía’s national parks or driving between its historic cities, the best holiday memories are unlikely to involve opening a letter from a car hire company a month after you’ve unpacked.

A little extra attention behind the wheel can make sure the only thing you bring home from Andalucía is a camera roll full of sunshine, not a speeding penalty.
