Local authorities in Estepona announced plans to extend video surveillance to the streets. This will improve traffic flow, road safety and reduce crime. Eventually, this massive network will cover 327 devices.
Estepona’s council workers installed 110 CCTV cameras in the town for the first time in 2023. Later, they added 73 additional cameras in different residential areas via partnership agreements with local neighbor’s associations. Now, plans call for an additional 144 smart devices to bring the total of 327 cameras throughout Estepona.
Residents will feel more secure with the increased coverage provided by the new cameras. One camera is now available per 243 people.
New units enhance traffic surveillance
Future equipment will be directly integrated into the existing visualisation platform and control platform, managed by the local police. Operators are able to gain real-time access for viewing, storing and recording images as well as video footage in a central council server. The local police station is the access point.
SafetyDeputy highlights key benefits
Ana Velasco – the deputy mayor for security – explains how the current traffic management arrangements are a clear improvement. The extension efforts are aimed at a wider coverage of multiple areas in the entire area.
The new devices will have more capacity and better performance. Modern tools help operators respond faster to traffic jams or accidents while ensuring smoother vehicle movements.
Speed checks are part of the expansion.
The contract documents contain provisions for a designated speed monitoring location. Drivers are encouraged to improve their overall movements and maintain a better lane discipline. Also, measures are taken to reduce vehicle emissions.
All installations adhere to strict national security guidelines, also known as ENS. All data handling is in compliance with current privacy and safety laws.
Public Reaction
Overall, the mood is positive towards these extra security measures. Marco, an Estepona-based businessman, said, “While the city has been relatively safe and law-abiding for many years, there’s a sense that crime and antisocial behavior could start to spread from neighboring towns. Conversations about this topic are common. “No one is bothered by extra eyes looking at us.”
Estepona builds on the early adoption of intelligent technology for urban control, which led the province. Local police are responsible for coordinating operations, while other security services provide support as needed.
