Spain is about to see a dramatic change in weather, as an early spring arrives after some of its worst stormy conditions in many years. According to forecasts, a powerful high-pressure anticyclonic system (anticyclonic ridge) will dominate Iberia starting this weekend. This will bring stable weather with sunny skies and unusually hot temperatures as early Monday. MeteoredWeather service
Mainland Spain is not expected to see any rain during this time period. This marks a complete change from the previously wet and instabile pattern.
The most pleasantly unusual day will be Monday, February 23, when a warm air mass at around will raise temperatures up to 10°C above seasonal averages. The daytime temperatures will be much higher than usual for late February.
Maximum warmth Monday
Temperatures are forecast to go up between 8 and 10°C above the seasonal average in most inland areas, while in some other parts the rise in temperature will be even more. Many provincial capitals could reach or exceed 20°C on Monday. In the southeast. Murcia may approach or even go over 29°C, potentially challenging the February 26 record of 29.4°C in the region. In other regions, much of the peninsula, wide areas of the Canaries, and inland Mallorca and Menorca, anomalies of +5°C or more are expected, resembling a typical April or May rather than late February.
A new mass of warm air from Africa will also bring significant heat to the Canary Islands. Easterly winds could carry that hazy Saharan dust to the archipelago, and localised foehn effect winds may push daytime highs to 30°C or above in some spots.
Variations and exceptions in regional standards
The sea breezes from the cold Mediterranean waters may cause coastal Mediterranean areas, the Gulf of Cadiz and certain Balearic coastal regions to remain cooler. The immediate coastal area and the inland/precoastal areas will be subject to sharp thermal contrasts.
From Tuesday onwards, a slight cooling is expected in southern areas, while northern parts of the country like Bilbao could hit around 25°C.
After weeks of unrest, this brief interlude of spring will be followed by a gradual drop in temperature across the majority of the country beginning mid-next-week. Don’t throw away your duvet yet. A cold snap could bring snow to Easter week.
