Police in Cartagena have arrested two people, one of them a minor, in connection with a series of alleged burglaries at businesses across several parts of the city.
The suspects are accused of up to 11 offences, including forced theft, the taking of a moped and belonging to a criminal group, according to police sources.
The arrests were made on Wednesday during an operation in the Torreciega area, where officers searched two homes in a cluster of substandard housing on the outskirts of the city.
During those searches, officers recovered several of the items reported stolen, including a scooter that was being investigated as part of the case. Around 30 officers from Cartagena police headquarters took part in the operation, from the judicial police and public safety units.
The investigation began three months ago after a series of break-ins in shops and other premises in José María Lapuerta, Barrio Peral and Avenida Tito Didio sparked concern among residents.
Police say the pair are suspected of targeting a range of businesses, including petrol stations, pharmacies, supermarkets and at least one hospitality venue. The inquiry remains open and further arrests have not been ruled out.
Officers also found that the homes were in very poor condition and contained several animals. Animal welfare staff were called in to collect them.
