An extremely talented ska band of children from Marbella left coaches absolutely speechless during the blind auditions of La Voz Kids (The Voice Kids), with their bold mashup of ‘Sweet Dreams’ and ‘Seven Nation Army’. All four coaches made a unanimous choice, and SKABUM chose to join Team Edurne.
Who and what is the secret behind their remarkable abilities? The school Rock Factory is the one that continues to produce the most talked about children’s groups on Spanish TV.
Antonio Orozco and Ana Mena didn’t even know what hit them.
La Voz Kids’ stage was smashed by a combination of a natural force and a huge party. SKABUM, a group of six kids between the ages of 8 and 12 dressed in orange and black checkered clothing, exploded into the room.
As soon as the first chords of the ska-flavoured mix landed in the studio, it erupted. The band’s technique of this style of music (Ska is upbeat Jamaican dance music blended with jazz and R&B), their composure and incredible sound were enough to turn every single chair. Antonio Orozco pressed the buttons. Ana Mena, Edurne, and Luis Fonsi’s expressions were telling. Fonsi grew up singing with a vocal group and was so moved by the young singers that he invited them to sing an acappella section. He wanted to hear harmonies which would have been impressive for any age group, but especially for girls of this age.
All coaches wanted them. SKABUM chose Team Edurne in the end. This gave the Madrid singer a strong contender for this season’s title.
Rock Factory is where it all started
A musical ability of this caliber at an early age isn’t a coincidence. SKABUM was the most recent act to emerge from Rock Factory. This highly successful school has earned the prestigious title of Spain’s Best in its Field. If you have ever watched a kids band dominate primetime television and wondered where they come from, then the answer is always the same.
Rock Factory’s method has transformed the way young people learn music. It’s the first choice for parents who are looking for more than just scales and theory. Rock Factory is not a traditional school. It trains students from the very first day to perform on real stages with real presence and real music.
Skabum is something we are proud of. Rafa, the director and teacher of Rock Factory, says, “We will enjoy a lot this new TV adventure we embark on with our students.” With schools in Malaga, San Pedro Alcantara and Marbella the centre has quietly crept into the top spot for rock music education in Spain. The place where today’s TV stars and tomorrow’s industry names get their start.
SKABUM, now part of Team Edurne is a new team that will take television on an exciting journey.
Ska punk is a growing trend in Spain, and the new generation knows where it all began: The Rock Factory.
