Spain enhances traffic control during busy Jerez MotoGP weekends

Spain’s traffic authority released information about a special operation to ensure road security as hundreds of thousand vehicles begin their journeys to Jerez in Andalucia to attend the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix. The General Directorate of Traffic or DGT estimates that about 500,000 trips to be expected Over the weekend from Friday, April 24, to Sunday, April 26,

This weekend a special operation with hundreds of police officers and aerial monitoring was conducted.

The Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix will be held at the Jerez-Angel Nieto Circuit in Andalucia, and the traffic authority announced that they would provide special assistance and surveillance for thousands of motorcyclists traveling from all over Spain and Europe. This Grand Prix Weekend will coincide with the Sevilla April Fair which will encourage more visitors to the area.

During this operation, around 300 Guardia Civil Traffic officers will be deployed, along with 50 DGT officials. Drones and helicopters will be used to monitor the main roads, and report any dangerous or reckless behavior. They will be used to conduct night flights in order to detect speeding and other violations.

Checkpoints: strict enforcement of speed limits, safety gear and driving under influence restrictions

Checkpoints were set up in Ciudad Real, Badajoz and other locations across Andalucia to address helmet and seatbelt usage, speeding and driving under the influence. Around 450 Guardia Civil Traffic officers are involved in this operation.

The speed limits will be enforced also by average speed cameras The road signs are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, drug and alcohol testing will be intensified during the weekends.

Alternative routes to reduce traffic flow

This plan also aims to improve the traffic flow of vehicles travelling to Jerez through alternative routes which allow for less traffic. The plan will be implemented along the main roads that lead from different points in Spain to Jerez.

Special emphasis will be placed on the main roads listed below:

  • Mediterranean Axis A-92 N-340 A-7 A-381 The following are some examples of how to get started: A-382.
  • Central Axis Take the A-4/N-IV from Madrid (Andalucia Highway). The following are some examples of how to get started: AP-4.
  • Northwest Axis & Portugal A-66, N-630 The following are some examples of how to get started: A-49 roads.

All drivers must adhere to the rules

To reduce the likelihood of road accidents, the traffic authority has urged both motorcyclists and other drivers to adhere to the rules. The use of public transport is encouraged to the maximum and the use of private vehicles should be minimized.

DGT also will send messages to their various social media networks, such as X, Facebook, and Instagram, in order to inform drivers and remind them to adhere to traffic rules. This is to ensure that all drivers are safe. In addition, the DGT will place variable message signs in high traffic areas to reinforce information shared on social media.

Jerez will provide a shuttle and bus service to and from this event

For easier access, the Jerez de la Frontera Town Council offers a bus shuttle service from and to the racetrack. The Minotaur roundabout is located near the local train station. As well as the Ifeca Fairgrounds. Both the shuttle and bus travel directly to the racetrack.

Motorcyclists, wear a helmet and the correct gear

DGT reminded drivers that motorcyclists can be among the most dangerous drivers on the road. DGT website states: “Traveling on a motorcycle increases the risk of injury by 20 to 40 fold compared to traveling in a car.” DGT reminds motorcycle riders to use the right gear, including a helmet.

  • Respect the speed limits On the main roads, when traveling to and from Jerez.
