Regional police in Valencia have seized 5,000 ecstasy pills and arrested two Spanish men after a routine roadside stop near the City of Arts and Sciences uncovered the drugs hidden in a car.
The haul, discovered on Wednesday afternoon close to the Casa Martinot restaurant, is understood to be worth more than €50,000 on the illegal market.
Nervous behaviour led to the search
According to the police account, officers stopped the vehicle during a routine control and noticed one of the occupants behaving nervously. They then searched the passenger compartment and found the ecstasy pills hidden beneath one of the seats.
The two men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of a public health offence. Their identities were confirmed later at the central police inspection unit in Zapadores after forensic officers took their fingerprints.
The case has now been handed to the National Police’s UDYCO drugs and organised crime unit, which will continue the investigation and try to establish where the synthetic drugs came from and who was meant to receive them.
Drug value and health risks
Police sources said the estimated street value of each tablet ranges from €10 to €13, which takes the total value of the seizure to more than €50,000.
The drugs office cited by the report also warned of the health risks linked to MDMA use, including severe overheating, dehydration, heart rhythm problems and, in extreme cases, collapse. Officials said the substance can also trigger anxiety, paranoia and psychotic episodes.
The operation took place in one of Valencia’s busiest tourist and leisure areas, close to the City of Arts and Sciences, where traffic checks are a routine part of police work.
