January continues to be marked by very unsettled weather and, after a weekend giving us some respite in Andalucía, all the forecasts indicate that rain will be back from Wednesday. In the meantime, the region is expected to experience two days of stable, mostly clear skies or partly cloudy, weather. There are no showers expected but the cold is a big factor. Highs in Seville, Malaga or even Cordoba will not exceed 15-16C and lows may reach as low as 6C. Strong gusts of wind are expected in the extreme east. Aemet, the Spanish state weather agency, has released two yellow alerts regarding rough seas. These will be in force from 12 noon in Malaga (Axarquía coastal strip) and on the coast of Granada for gusts from the west and northwest of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7).
A very wet, unsettled and rainy week is predicted for Spain. This includes widespread and intense rainfall along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines. Storm Harry is set to bring torrential downpours and severe winds along with rough seas and heavy rains to eastern Spain by Wednesday. A series of storms from the Atlantic will be driven by a powerful polar jetstream, and bring successive cold fronts to the Iberian Peninsula from west towards east. High pressure systems will be absent, except in the Canary Islands and a brief ridge of high pressure over Andalucía between Thursday and Friday,” states Spanish weather website Meteored.
On Thursday and Friday, rain will continue to fall across the western half Iberian Peninsula.
Aemet says that the rain will return to the region on Wednesday. The forecast from Aemet predicts “cloudy skies becoming overcast in the afternoon, with moderate rainfall and the possibility of heavy downpours”. The forecast also predicts light frosts in the eastern third of Spain. Winds will intensify to moderate strength in the afternoon from the south-west, with strong gusts of wind along the Mediterranean Coast and Strait of Gibraltar.
Meteored says that rain is expected to continue in the western half of Iberia both on Thursday and into Friday. This will affect “particularly Galicia and the Strait of Gibraltar region, and mountain ranges exposed westward winds such as the Sistema Central.” This pattern of Atlantic Fronts could continue through the weekend. In other words, it is possible that more than 100 litres of rain per square metre will accumulate in western Galicia and western Sistema Central, as well as the Strait of Gibraltar.
