Jonas Vingegaard – two-time Tour de France champion and Vuelta champion last year – suffered a serious crash while training on the Fuente de la Reina in Malaga, a well-known climb for local cyclists.
The Danish rider, who was reportedly trying escape the wheel of an air fan, lost control near the bottom of a steep bend.
Pedro García Fernández, the Malaga rider involved, posted on Strava that Vingegaard fell despite trying to avoid him. “You can both be professional and humble. Jonas fell when he tried to leave me in the rear on the descent. I checked to see if he’d been okay. He was annoyed that I followed his wheel,” wrote he.
Visma-Lease a Bike (Vingegaard’s team), confirmed the accident and stressed safety during training.
“Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday. He is fine and has not sustained any serious injuries. As a team, we want to encourage fans to put safety first. Please allow riders to practice and give them the most space and quiet as possible for your own wellbeing and that of others.
Vingegaard is in Andalucía preparing for the UAE Tour before taking on the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia later this season.
