Storm ‘Alice’ triggers red alert in Alicante Province

A powerful DANA, named Alice (Depression Aimed at High Levels), is now hitting the Alicante Province. It will bring torrential rainfall, flooding risk, and dangerous road conditions.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued a Red Alert for the Southern Alicante Coast, signaling extreme danger. In the red‑alert zone, rainfall could exceed 180 litres per square metre in 12 hours. The remaining coast, which includes Alicante City, Elche, Torrevieja, is covered by orange and yellow alerts. 

Storm Alice DANA, What does DANA stand for? 

DANAs occur when an isolated cold air mass triggers intense instabilities. This can lead to persistent downpours as well as thunderstorms, flooding and strong winds. Emergency services warn about flash floods and rapid rising in dry riverbeds. This is especially true in rural and low-lying areas. 

Road closures & disruptions Alice

Already, there are closures in many towns as well as smaller roads away from the main routes. In many towns, streets have been flooded near drainage channels or ravines. Authorities have urged caution especially near ramblas (valleys), underpasses, and valleys. Drivers are reminded to limit their travel and avoid minor roads. 

Be careful during storm Alice

Avoid walking on streets where water tends to collect. Do not cross roads covered in water, either by foot or car. Residents of rural villages, river valleys or areas near dry watercourses should also be alert. It is recommended that you stay indoors during the periods of heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. 

It is expected that the DANA will gradually fade over the weekend. However, there may be some strong gusts and showers. Residents and visitors in Alicante and Elche as well as Torrevieja and smaller towns should keep an eye on updates from AEMETAvoid non-essential trips until the alert has been lifted.
