Spain’s weather agency AEMET The red alert has been issued for Alicante and Murcia on Friday, October 10. It warns of possible flash floods and torrential rainfall as DANA “Alice” sweeps the country.

Forecasters predict that up to 180 litres per square metre of rain could fall within 12 hours along the southern coast of Alicante and surrounding areas of Murcia.

“The situation may worsen rapidly, and people are advised to avoid unnecessary travel”, AEMET stated, urging locals and visitors to be aware of official updates and cautious around flood-prone areas.

The red warning – the highest on the weather scale – comes as the DANA brings unstable skies, heavy downpours and sudden drops in temperature across much of eastern Spain.

Storm ‘Alice’ brings unstable skies and plunging temperatures

The DANA, a high-altitude cold front known for triggering sudden, intense weather, is already disrupting conditions across the Valencian Community, Murcia, Tarragona, Almería, and the Balearic Islands.

On Thursday, September 9 and Friday, October 10, skies will be cloudy and overcast with heavy showers and thunderstorms possible.  The temperatures are also expected to drop in some parts of the eastern part of Spain.

AEMET reports that while the rain in northern Spain will be lighter, it will still fall heavily on the Balearics and southeastern Spain. This could lead to flooding and disruption of travel.

Residents are urged to be alert and avoid dangerous areas

Emergency services are preparing for possible road closures and power outages, as well as evacuations from flood-prone zones.

Officials advise residents and tourists to avoid driving on flooded roads and stay informed via official channels.

AEMET warns, however, that some yellow or orange alerts may remain in certain eastern regions over the weekend.

For now, the message is simple: stay cautious, stay informed, and don’t underestimate this storm – Spain’s Mediterranean coast is once again bracing for a wild autumn weekend.
