Spain warned of ‘furnace’ summer as Super El Niño fears grow

Warmer ocean temperatures highlight developing El Niño conditions worldwide

Spain could be heading into a very difficult summer, with meteorologists warning that a developing Super El Niño may push temperatures to extreme levels across much of the country, especially in the south. Experts say that after an unusually warm spring with temperatures reaching 30C+ in some places, this could be a sign of things to come in the months ahead.

It is not just a single heatwave that causes concern. The concern is not about a single heatwave, but rather the possibility of prolonged periods of intense heat that arrive sooner than expected and last well into summer.

The early heat in Spain is a cause for concern ahead of summer 2026

The warning is issued at a moment when temperatures in many parts Spain feel like they are closer to spring than early summer. Even in areas that don’t usually experience such high temperatures at this time, the readings have been rising sharply over the past few days.

This kind of spike in temperatures is closely watched by meteorologists. This does not mean that summer will be extreme, but it may indicate a pattern.

Luismi PérezSpeaking to Cadena SER, explained what could be happening right now as the beginning of something much larger. He says that the atmosphere has already begun to move in a direction which favours warmer temperatures.

What Super El Niño means for Spain and Europe

At the centre of the concern is El Niño, a climate phenomenon linked to warmer waters in the Pacific Ocean. Although it may seem far away from Spain, its effects can be felt around the world.

The air circulation patterns can be affected by the rise in ocean temperatures in this region. Weather Europe. Pérez described it as a chain reaction, where changes in one part of the planet end up shaping conditions somewhere else entirely.

When El Niño becomes stronger, often referred to as a Super El Niño, those effects tend to be more pronounced. In Spain, this usually means more heat and dry conditions, especially during the summer.

Andalucía likely to face the most intense heat

If the forecasts prove accurate, Andalucía is once again expected to be at the centre of the heat. This region is known for having the highest temperatures recorded in Spain. Last summer, Jerez de la frontera reached 45.8C.

Experts say that although records may not be broken, the conditions for a very intense season are in place.

The length of the heat wave is what worries the meteorologists, not the height at which the temperature might climb. One hot day is not a problem. One hot day is one thing.

What weather patterns can trap heat over Spain

The position of high-pressure systems over Europe will be a key factor. When these systems settle on the Iberian Peninsula they tend to block cool air and prevent cloud formation.

Heat builds up very quickly in such conditions. The temperatures could rise further if the warm air that comes from North Africa is brought north more frequently.

In recent years, this combination has led to prolonged periods of heat without a break.

Pérez warned that there could be moments when the heat arrives at the worst possible time, right in the middle of the summer peak.

Some areas of Spain could see some relief

Not all areas will feel the same degree of heat. If winds change and bring air from the Atlantic, northern areas, especially along the Cantabrian Coast, may experience slightly cooler temperatures.

It is still far from certain. The weather patterns can quickly change, and they will be affected by the pressure systems that move through the next few weeks.

Most of the nation is advised to prepare now for a more challenging and heavier summer than usual.

All global weather signals point to the same direction

Spain is not alone in experiencing strange weather conditions. Meteorologists around the world have tracked stronger storms, and unexpected temperature spikes over recent weeks.

These changes are being linked to the same developing El Niño pattern, which appears to be gaining strength.

This gives Spain the impression that it is not a local change, but a part of a global shift.

It is still too early to predict how extreme summer will be. The forecast is tense, but experts are not worried.

Many people in Spain are aware of the simple message. This summer might arrive sooner than expected, feel hotter and last longer.
