Spain To Make Safety Beacons Mandatory
Safety warning beacons will be introduced in the future To replace the warning triangles that are currently used by drivers in Spain. Each Spanish registered van, car, or minibus will be required to have a V16 light inside by the first of January 2026. Drivers without the beacon will face an €80 fine.
The V16 beacon has many advantages. It can be attached magnetically to the vehicle’s roof and deployed without the driver leaving the vehicle. The beacon emits 360-degree amber flashing lights that can be seen up to a mile away.
The V16 can easily be placed on top of the car.
Geolocation for faster response
Geolocation is included in the DGT-approved beacons The DGT central traffic management platform is connected to these beacons. When the beacon is turned on, location sharing can be done automatically. Every 100 seconds, the beacon sends the exact GPS location of the vehicle to DGT’s cloud-based system.
The location sharing feature will help to speed up the response. When there is a breakdown or an emergency, the DGT system will alert you and other drivers. The DGT system alerts emergency services immediately, notifies other drivers through roadside variable message boards, and adjusts traffic warnings.
DGT Approved beacons
The V16 beacon costs between €35 and €55. Only those approved by DGT can be used on vehicles in Spain. These can be found on the official website here. Many cheaper models are not compliant with new regulations. These are usually older V16 beacons that do not have the GPS/DGT 3.0 connectivity.
