Smart traffic control & speed trap for Estepona


Estepona has announced that it plans to upgrade the traffic management system of the city by installing new intelligent AI-driven camera systems at 80 strategic points in the town center and on the outskirts.

The project, valued at approximately €970,000, will be put out to tender in the coming weeks, the local authority has confirmed.

The expanded system, which builds on the smart cameras network that was first launched in 2023 will include state-of-the art devices with enhanced abilities for measuring traffic densities and predicting traffic flows, to reduce the chances of traffic jams and parking problems. These upgrades aim to increase urban mobility and smooth traffic circulation. They also enable quick response to incidents, such as accidents or congestion.

Big Brother cameras are watching the town

The entire network Traffic Control Centre will be managed centrally from the Local Police Headquarters. Real-time access to the other security forces is also available.

The new intelligent system has several key features, including:

  • Automatic license plate recognition
  • Geolocation of vehicles and vehicle classification in real time
  • Live interconnection of all cameras
  • A central server in municipal buildings is used to record and store images and video in high definition.

This contract also includes the installation and maintenance of one DGT-certified speed camerThe location is yet to be determined. The camera is supported by a mobile license plate capture unit, and software integrated into the device that allows it to connect directly with the database of the Directorate-General of Traffic.

All data transmissions will be compliant with Spain’s National Security Framework (ENS) Ensure that the operation is secure and legal.

The contract does not just cover the installation of the equipment but also includes the maintenance of the existing network. The local police will have control over the new equipment, which will ensure 24-hour traffic monitoring and an immediate response in case of incidents.
