Rafael Nadal revealed that his years of taking anti-inflammatory medications caused permanent intestinal damage. The 22 time Grand Slam champion said this in an interview to a Spanish sports magazine AS.
Nadal reflected during the interview about the sacrifices he had to make in order to compete at a high level despite the repeated injuries he has sustained over the past two decades of the ATP Tour. Nadal revealed that he suffered “two perforations” of his intestines due to prolonged use of antiinflammatory medications. This was the cost he paid for continuing to compete in spite of chronic pain. Much of Nadal’s career was affected by injuries, particularly the chronic foot condition Müller-Weiss syndrome, which repeatedly threatened his ability to continue playing professionally.
Nadal’s condition, which causes degeneration in a foot bone, forced him to change his training and movement methods over the course of his career. Nadal said in the interview that custom-made insoles to relieve pressure on his feet changed the way he moves on the court, and caused him to put more strain on other parts of his body.
He said that he often found himself in a situation where attempting to protect a particular injury caused problems elsewhere. His career was also characterized by recurring knee problems, abdominal muscle tears and hip problems.
Nadal’s injury history has defined his career
