Storm Claudia, which has caused more than 620 incidents in the Andalucía region since Thursday, hit the province of Huelva the hardest yesterday, causing the Junta to activate operational situation 1 of the Flood Risk Plan (PERI). The Minister of Health Presidency, and Emergencies Antonio Sanz, gave the order after half past five in the afternoon, as reported through the 112 Andalucía emergency service’s account on the social media network X.

While this alert is active Travel only when necessary and with caution.

The Junta explained on X that “operational situation 1 refers to emergencies that can be controlled through the use of ordinary means and resources available within the regional government of Andalucía or with occasional support from resources whose mobilisation requires specific coordination by the central bodies of the national civil protection system”.

After the storm hit Nerva, it was here that a waterspout caused the Santa María ravine Overflow. The rapid response of emergency services and local residents saved the city from major damage. However, it brought to mind the severe flooding that occurred in the municipality in 2019.

The incident happened in the early afternoon when the Santa María ravine, which crosses the municipality underground, was already accumulating a large amount of water at its headwaters. The heavy rain Trunks, branches, and other plant debris have been blocking small bridges. and dams along the riverbed, until it finally collapsed, causing the overflow at the height of the Pozo Bebé neighbourhood, in the northern part of the town.

Instantly, water streams formed and flowed through many streets in the town. Local Police and town council works services responded quickly and opened channels and manholes in order to help evacuate the water. Residents also helped. This rapid response helped to limit the damage.

El Castillo de las Guardas was cut off by the storm.

Seville was also under the same emergency alert yesterday, and experienced some difficulties. Heavy rains led to the collapse of a portion of the main road near El Castillo de las Guardas The road was split in half by a vertical drop that measured several metres. Guardia Civil and road maintenance workers quickly arrived on the scene when a vehicle with four occupants crashed into the road. They cordoned off the area, diverted traffic and immediately cordoned it off. Four people were treated in hospital, but the condition of their health has not yet been revealed.

Cordoba is experiencing small tornadoes

The province of Cordoba recorded up to 60mm, which caused flooding on some roads but no damage. The extreme instability of the storm Claudia, in addition to the significant rainfall, caused strange phenomena, such as small “tubas”, in some parts of the province.

Tubas, which are small vortices formed by air within thunderstorm clouds, can be dangerous. Despite being smaller than a tornado, they can still be dangerous. The spinning air that is rising in a storm occurs when the wind speed or direction changes. When this spinning becomes more intense, a tubea can form. In some cases, it may even touch the ground.

The State Weather Agency (Aemet) maintained the yellow warning active in the countryside, Sierra and Pedroches, and Subbética Areas of heavy rain (up 40mm can accumulate in certain areas) and wind gusts up to 70km/h.
