Two off-duty Mossos d’Esquadra officers stopped a knife attack on a woman in a bar near Barcelona’s Ciutat de la Justícia on Tuesday morning, after intervening moments before the assault could go ahead.
The suspect was restrained at the scene and later arrested as police took over the case, according to the initial reports. Investigators are still trying to establish exactly what led to the incident and what relationship, if any, existed between the man and the woman.
Incident in a busy area near the court complex
The attempted attack happened shortly before 12.30pm in a bar in the area between Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, close to the Ciutat de la Justícia court complex. Witnesses said some customers realised the man was carrying a large knife and shouted at him to drop it.
According to the reports, the two officers happened to be in the same bar while off duty and moved in quickly, disarming the man and pinning him to the floor before the situation escalated further.
Arrest and ongoing inquiry
Reinforcements were called to the scene soon afterwards and took the suspect into police custody. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted assault causing injury, police sources said.
No personal details about the detained man have been released, and it is not yet known whether he has any previous police record. The investigation remains open.
The incident was also reported by another outlet covering the same police intervention in Barcelona.
