Spain set for sticky calima dust clouds end to July and rising heat as brief cooler spell ends

Spain to see sticky calima clouds and rising temperatures as July ends

The weather in Spain will be changing quickly this week. Those on the Costas can expect hot sea breezes to give way to dusty skies and temperatures that are rising across the country. After a short respite, the conditions will quickly change with haze in southern areas and warmer weather by midweek. Malaga province will feel the change first, with locals in Malaga waking up to 27ºC at 7 a.m. on Monday, with clear skies and moderate terral winds blowing hot air from inland.

The cooling effect of the sea temperature

Sea temperatures have dropped to 19°C, bringing welcome cooler nights for a few days. Yesterday saw peaks of 38ºC in Velez-Malaga, while Estepona and Rincon de la Victoria also hit 38ºC. Calima dust is expected to return late Tuesday on the south coast and in parts of Andalucia. This will bring a sticky, muggy feeling.

No terral episodes are expected for the rest this week and into early August. From Monday, strong levante winds with gusts from the south will dominate the Strait of Gibraltar coast and Cadiz. After the intense heat of recent days, temperatures started to drop on Sunday in Andalucia.

Cooling breezes along the East Coast of Spain

Valencia has enjoyed a typical summer of stability. There are mostly clear skies or light clouds on Monday in the Valencian Community. Coastal capitals will see highs of 31ºC in Alicante and Castellon de la Plana, and 30ºC in Valencia. Inland spots vary more, with Onteniente reaching 34ºC and Requena 33ºC. Orihuela in Alicante province could hit 33ºC, while Morella in Castellon starts fresh at 18ºC before climbing to near 30ºC.

From midday, breezes from the east or southeast will help to moderate the coastal heat. The winds are light at first, but they become stronger in the afternoon. They then ease off again. Murcia should remain hot with very little variation. Monday brings clear skies to Murcia with highs near 34ºC and lows around 21ºC. Tuesday stays similar at 35ºC maximum, while Wednesday could reach 36ºC under continued clear conditions.

Heatwaves to return in midweek

There are threats of another heatwave. Models show warmer air spreading across Spain As the week advances. Many inland areas could see temperatures climb sharply, with 36ºC to 38ºC possible in major river valleys by Tuesday. Some spots in Andalucia, Extremadura and beyond may push towards 40ºC by Wednesday. This pattern indicates a possible return to warmer conditions after a recent dip.

Coastal breezes may provide some comfort to residents of Malaga and Valencia. But those living inland should drink plenty of water and avoid the afternoon sun. Calima will cause reduced visibility in the southern part of Spain and increase discomfort for those in the affected areas. The Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and the surrounding areas will still have plenty of sun. However, those who are sensitive to dust or high humidity may notice the change from Tuesday.

Plan ahead by checking your local area AEMET updatesThe heat is more intense in the interior. The best times to be outside are in the early mornings or evenings before temperatures rise. The week begins on a mild note for many coastal areas before the change, giving tourists and Spaniards a small window of time to enjoy before the next heat wave arrives. Keep yourself prepared and take advantage of the fresher winds while they last.
