The completion of the final phase of Marbella’s traffic reorganisation has resulted in an increase of 400 parking spaces, a significant improvement for Distrito Oeste. The changes in some sections have tripled parking capacity by re-designing the layout with angled and perpendicular parking arrangements (battery).
The project, carried out between 2024 and 2025, involved an overall investment of around €70,000. The works included milling the road surface before horizontal road marking and street signage. The goal was to maximize the use of space available while improving safety.
The first phase was to create a large parking lot for events with high attendance, like the Davis Cup. It then expanded into nearby residential streets. The final phase concentrated on Calle Santillana del Mar from its lower end to the connection with the A-7. Parking was a major issue for large-scale events such as this, with many forced to park in hotels.
Marbella residents complained about the upgrades.
As a result of requests from the local residents, several improvements have been implemented. These include the additions of access driveways, zones for loading/unloading, school transport and restrictions on large vehicles in order to improve traffic flow and coexistence.
These changes were necessary due to the rapid growth of the city and the large number of residential areas. Narrower lanes are achieved by angled parking, promoting calmer and safer driving. This is especially useful in areas that have direct access the motorway, as well as key facilities like the Marbella Forum, residences, or major housing developments.
The reorganisation has improved parking management for large events and freed up more space, making it easier to move around, both for residents and visitors. Reordered streets, narrowed roads and improved traffic flow are the result of the reorganisation.
