La Cala Lions launch life-saving campaign and shine blue on World Diabetes Day

La Cala Lions Club welcomed the festive season by demonstrating a powerful community spirit. They also placed an emphasis on World Diabetes Day which took place on Friday November 14.

In an impressive act of solidarity, Mijas Town Hall has been dramatically floodlit in the blue colour, which is the international symbol for unity and awareness among people with diabetes around world.

Mijas joins iconic landmarks around the world, such as the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House. The Tower of Pisa is also lit in blue, to remind millions of people with diabetes that they’re never alone. The Lions would like to express their deepest gratitude to Mijas Town Hall as well as the La Cala Foreign Residents Department who made this display possible.

Understanding diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic, serious health condition caused by a body that cannot produce insulin or use it effectively, resulting in high levels of blood sugar (glucose). Type 1, a condition that is often diagnosed as autoimmune in childhood, is one of the two major types. Type 2, which is more common, can often be caused by lifestyle or age-related factors. Type 2 diabetes is estimated to affect 20 to 25% of people over the age of 50. This awareness campaign is important because early detection and management can prevent serious complications like heart disease, kidney damage and blindness.
