For those who have a love of heights, and are looking for an adrenaline rush along Spain’s Caminito del Rey trail, they will need to be prepared. wait a bit longer For the grand unveiling of the longest pedestrian suspension span in the country.

Rumors have it that construction of the 110 metre marvel is being delayed. Its inauguration will now be in Spring 2026, rather than late 2025. Despite the delays, the bridge is expected to take the Caminito del Rey to new heights. Literally, it will dangle 50 metres above Gaitanes Gorge.

You can also find out more about the following: Caminito del Rey, often dubbed in English the “King’s Pathway,” has drawn over 3 million visitors like a magnet since its daring 2015 reopening, injecting €400 million into the local economy and sustaining more than 685 jobs in surrounding Andalusian towns like Alora, Ardales, and Antequera. This new suspension bridge, a €1.25 million self-funded project sourced entirely from ticket sales, is set to become a crown jewel in the trail’s future, making both the 120th anniversary of its original 1905 construction and the 10th anniversary of its modern revival.

The engineering meets the adrenaline in this daring design

The bridge, designed for safety and spectacle, will span an impressive 110 meters across a dramatic span, parallel to the historic iron rail bridge and El Chorro exit tunnel, surpassing any existing pedestrian suspension footbridges currently in Spain. The bridge is suspended at an altitude of 50 meters above the rocky chasm. It features a gentle 7.5% downward slope that eases the descent.

“We have put a lot of effort into each detail, starting with the 4,500 kg main steel cable and the 1,450 meters of braided stainless steel for unmatched stability,” said Francisco Salado, president of the Diputación de Malaga, during the project’s ceremonial launch on March 28.

Experts from the University of Granada carried out a comprehensive study on safety to guarantee the slope’s integrity. They included features such improved evacuation paths, helipads as well as the signature “cardio-insured” trail. defibrillators.

Why the delay in delivering your order? Weather and precision prevail

Initial plans called for the unveiling of the project to coincide with the anniversary celebrations in November 2025. However, the unpredictable weather conditions that fall brings to the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Gorge, combined with the necessity for thorough final inspections has pushed the timeline to spring 2026. The initial timeline was deemed too ambitious by many.

Timing and special guests

The postponement will make the opening coincide with the public release of El Espíritu del Caminito, a new documentary by Andalucia Digital Multimedia and Canal Sur, planned for 2026. The film will trace the history of the path, from its origins as a royal pathway under King Alfonso XIII up to its rebirth today as a global adventure attraction. The King and Queen are expected to attend the opening ceremony of the new bridge.
