Estepona traffic camera set to surpass 400 as police car scans each plate

Estepona council has put over a €900,000 contract out to bidders The majority of the smart cameras will be placed in outer areas. The network is expected to have more than 410 devices, according to officials. According to the padrones latest data, there are 79.621 residents who have a camera.

The councillors began constructing 110 units in the year 2023, and then added another 73 through agreements with urbanisations. This brings the total number of housing units to around 240. Ana Velasco, Deputy Mayor of the City of San Juan, said that previous coverage had already improved traffic flows. The next batch is intended to fill in any gaps.

How the expanded network works

New cameras can read numberplates, place vehicles onto a map and sort them by type. They will also feed live pictures to a central server in the Local Police headquarters. The operators can then share the feeds with other forces if needed. The contract documents also require speed radars to be approved so that the same grid can monitor both density and velocity.

Velasco informed reporters that the new equipment would allow staff to react quicker to accidents, traffic jams, and other everyday delays.

The police car that reads license plates while it is moving

A piece of equipment that is included in a patrol car. This mobile reader will be able to read every plate, no matter if the vehicle is stationary or moving. The software will flag local offenses such as double-parking, yellow-line parking, pavement parking, or blocked loading bays. It may also flag road safety breaches, including no ITV and no compulsory insurance.

The software that processes fines must be able to communicate directly with DGT records, so that tickets can processed without additional paperwork. Installers must follow the National Security Scheme in Spain, and data protection rules for each transmission.

This project is more than just about traffic. The project has been more than traffic.

The bids were due via the public procurement platform. The winner of the bid also maintains the existing cameras.
