Clive Marks started the Don’t Be a Man initiative in 2022 after he was diagnosed with prostate carcinoma. He’s now in remission. He encourages men everywhere to have a quick, painless test.
A recent walk organized under the campaign banner was attended by 70 participants, who covered 10 km. The campaign was able to exceed funding targets set for two defibrillators, free PSA testing and other services.

Calahonda Clinic offers free PSA tests
Call 952 9333 77 to book a PSA test for men at El Campanario Medical Centre, Calahonda. On request, staff will provide a special Don’t Be a Man coupon. The results include advice on what to do if the readings are outside of normal ranges.
Clive Marks initially did not experience any obvious symptoms. A problem can be detected by frequent trips to the bathroom at night. One out of eight men will develop prostate cancer. Early treatment allows for a normal existence for many.
Age-related PSA level guidelines explained
Doctors evaluate PSA levels using nanograms/millilitre. The levels rise with age, as the prostate increases in size. Evaluations are guided now by ranges that take into account the age of the patient, rather than a fixed number.
Men between the ages of 40 and 49 should aim to stay under 2.5 ng/mL. Between 50 and 59, aim to stay below 3.5 ng/mL. For those aged 60-69, the limit is 4.5 ng/mL. Men over 70 years of age are limited to 6.5 ng/mL.
Next steps in the campaign and community support
Sponsorship and raffle prizes were provided by local businesses, including Dempseys Irish Bar and Biddy Mulligans La Cala. Supermercado Miraflores as well as The Jammy Olive Cafe contributed additional donations.
Plans are now moving forward for a defibrillator to be installed at the Dona Lola Complex. Somer wood will also start a walk-and-talk group to promote mental health. Organisers are expecting another event to take place next year.
Participants and donors made the day a fantastic success as Clive Marks His family and others involved were thanked for their contribution. Clive and other residents are helping to educate the Costa del Sol on simple, life-saving measures that we can all do.
