Aemet’s state weather forecaster predicts very heavy and persistent rain throughout eastern Spain, including the Balearic Islands. This is expected to occur from Wednesday evening through Sunday.
Alice is the name given to DANA, a weather phenomenon that was first named.
Cuenca has an orange alert that goes into effect at 5pm.
Ruben DelCampo, spokesperson for Aemet, stated: “This situation is of great danger because the intensity and persistency of the showers could lead to sudden flooding of low-lying streams and areas.”
In the Valencian Community and Castilla-La Mancha, as well as in the southern part of Aragon, the first heavy rain showers are expected.
There is a possibility of hailstorms and between 15-30 litres/m2 can be accumulated in one hour.
The showers will continue to be heavy and very persistent on Thursday.
The most affected areas will be the coasts of Catalunya, Valencia, Ibiza, Formentera, Murcia, the eastern half andalucia, as well as the south of Castilla La Mancha.
Aemet warns inland areas in the Valencian Community as well as Castilla-La Mancha and Catalunya.
Ruben Del Campo says the biggest amount of rain will fall in coastal and pre-coastal areas of Alicante and Valencia where showers could be ‘very intense’.
He says that some showers can exceed 40 litres of water per m2 within an hour.
“It’s possible that with the amount expected of ran, there will be floods in low lying areas on Thursday or Friday,” he said.
Over the weekend, the bad weather will continue, particularly on Sunday, affecting the coastal areas of Valencia and Murcia as well as the Balearic Islands.
