Antonio Banderas returns to Malaga, 2026 to perform Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd


Antonio Banderas has confirmed that he will star and direct the theatrical adaptation of the Malaga-born Hollywood actor. Sweeney Todd The Spanish-language version of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece will be performed at his Teatro del Soho CaixaBank by 2026.

Banderas made the announcement on 24 October during the theater’s launch of its new Godspell season. It will be Banderas third Sondheim restoration at the venue that he founded in 2019 and marks his third Sondheim re-imagining. Banderas, who has previously starred in Sondheim’s Company and Gypsy (both 2021), will now play Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street. The show is being produced for Spanish audiences with local cast and translated lyrics.

A Malaga-flavoured demon barber

Banderas stated that he had been in possession of the rights since a certain time. been reported as saying. “Sweeney is rage and pain with dark humour. This is what I want explore on stage. It will be operatic. intense and very Malaga.” Sources close to the production have indicated that a 2026 premiere is possible, although no date has been confirmed. This will allow Banderas to finish commitments with his upcoming TV show.

The 667-seater theatre in Malaga’s Soho district has been a launchpad in Spain for Broadway-calibre shows. Banderas’ previous Sondheim adaptions drew more than 140,000 audiences nationwide. Company also won several Max Awards. Casting for Mrs Lovett remains under wraps, though speculation points to Soho regulars like Marta Ribera or María Adamuz.

He is a revenge-seeking man who seeks to kill those responsible for ruining his life, including his wife and his daughter. Sweeney Todd starts to execute her sinister plot with Mrs Lovett’s help, a savvy and enterprising baker. Her barbershop turns into the scene of Sweeney’s cruel murders. Mrs. Lovett uses the corpses as filling in the meat pies she sells.
