AI eyes: Mijas’ ambitious plan to fill streets with highest-tech CCTV

AI eyes: Mijas plans to flood streets with high-tech CCTV

The Mijas Town Council unveiled a plan that aims to improve public safety in the municipality by installing more than 150 high tech surveillance cameras with artificial intelligence. Ana Mata’s project is a significant step forward for crime prevention, safety of citizens, and traffic management.

With an investment of more than €2 million from the 2026 budget, the system will be fully managed by a Local Police Coordination Centre (CECOM) and will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The CCTV cameras will be strategically located in three of the main urbanisations in Mijas Pueblo and La Cala.

Mijas has electronic eyes that watch all the corners

The network has dedicated cameras that are used to ensure the safety of residents on public squares, in areas with high traffic, and in public spaces. These cameras help prevent crime and protect property, people, and heritage. Additional cameras focusing on traffic control and license plate recognition will also be installed at roundabouts and entrances/exits of towns and access points to identify vehicles, monitor movement, and assist police investigations.

The system was designed in collaboration with Mijas Police and a specialist company. It incorporates night vision and AI-driven video analysis. Images will be transmitted mainly via wireless networks in order to minimize civil works and costs as well as disruptions on public roads. The most sensitive parts of the town were selected first, based upon technical and police criteria.

Mayor Mata promotes the “sense safety”

Mayor Mata emphasized the importance of this action for Mijas. Mijas has the third-largest population in the province of Malaga (approaching 100 000 residents). Coexistence, well-being and leisure in a city, as well as daily life, are all possible only with a genuine sense of safety. she stated. “Mijas already has a very safe municipality. This initiative will make the area even safer for everyone.”

The council has assured that this project strictly adheres to data protection regulations. Areas and images are clearly marked and used only for administrative and police purposes.

The State Contracting website has published the contract for the project. Bids for installation and management are accepted until February 2.

Mijas streets to see increased police presence

This project, which is the latest in a series of improvements to security infrastructure, builds on Mijas ongoing efforts to combat the crime, a problem that neighbouring towns are feared to have escaped to, and improve police. The council has taken several measures to demonstrate its commitment to public security.

  • Mijas, the only town on the Costa del Sol to have reduced crime by 10% in December 2025, was the only one to do so, against the trend of regional increases. This was due to a reorganisation of operations, new strategies and an increase in visible patrols and pre-emptive checks. In December 2025, Mijas was highlighted as the only Costa del Sol town to reduce overall crime by 10 per cent. This is thanks to operational reorganisation, new strategies, and a visible increase in patrols and preventive checks.
  • The council will double the number of police officers on the street during the summer 2025 to cope with the increase in visitors.

The 2025 budget for the Local Police was doubled to nearly €1.5 million, the largest increase in five years—supporting intensified efforts.

Earlier this year, reports showed a 41% increase in arrests in the first quarter of 2025 as compared to last year. The figures indicate a more proactive crackdown against crime including theft, assaults, outstanding court orders, and other crimes.

These measures, along with the new video-surveillance system, demonstrate Mijas’ proactive attitude to maintain and enhance its reputation as one the safest municipalities on the Costa del Sol.
