The annual gastronomy festival in the coastal town of Los Alcázares on the Costa Cálida proved to be an outstanding success this year, even after being hastily rearranged. Originally scheduled for October but postponed by Storm Alice due to flooding, organisers had to change the layout and schedule at short notice. Despite the challenges, the festival was held on the 14th-15th of November and attracted a large number of people.
Over the course of the weekend, 11,000 people visited Plaza Manuel Floreal. The participating establishments offered an incredible 19,000 tapas. These figures show the popularity of this event which attracted 2,000 new attendees. Around 700 people also took part in the three-day programme of activities, which included guided tours, wine pairings, and cooking workshops. All were designed to showcase the culinary identity of the region.
The event’s success is especially notable, considering the time it took to reorganise. Even though there were many adjustments to make to accommodate new dates and venues, as well as reshaping the schedule, the weekend went smoothly. Local authorities stressed that the high attendance reinforces Gastromar’s position as the most important gastronomic event in Murcia.
Taste the traditional flavours of the seaside
For expats living in Spain – especially those based in the Murcia area – the festival offered an ideal chance to explore traditional flavours in a relaxed, seaside setting. Los Alcázares, known for its year-round appeal and well-developed tourism infrastructure, provided a lively stage for residents and visitors to immerse themselves in regional food culture. The mild November climate and festival atmosphere made this event enjoyable and accessible for all ages.
The results of this year’s festival highlight the appeal and resilience of local food festivals. They show that even unexpected setbacks can not dampen interest in community events. With high participation across both tastings and cultural activities, Gastromar continues to strengthen Los Alcázares’ reputation as a destination for quality culinary experiences. The excitement shown by the participants suggests that future editions will attract a larger and more diverse audience, especially among international visitors who want to get a deeper connection to life in southern Spain.
