Guardia Civil uncovers huge cocaine stash in warehouse probe

Guardia Civil officers are investigating a suspected cocaine haul in Águilas that could weigh as much as 10 tonnes, after the drug was found in two industrial units on the El Labradorcico estate.

The inquiry is still at an early stage and no arrests have been made. Officers are trying to establish who stored the drugs, how they arrived in the area and where the cargo was meant to go.

Discovery in the industrial estate

The cache came to light on Friday, 30 October, after a pallet loaded with cocaine reportedly fell from a forklift during a transfer inside one of the warehouses. The impact broke some of the packaging and scattered packets of the drug across the building.

Workers inside the premises left the scene. When Local Police arrived after an alert about a possible workplace accident, they found the warehouse empty.

During the inspection, officers discovered that the pallets being stored contained packets of cocaine. At that point, the Guardia Civil took over the case and later located a second warehouse in the same industrial estate, where more drugs were also found.

Probe into an alleged criminal network

According to the investigation, the buildings had no company signs or identifying labels and may have been used as temporary storage before the drugs were moved on. Early lines of inquiry suggest the cargo could belong to a criminal organisation of Albanian origin, although that has not been confirmed.

By Sunday, officers were still removing the drugs and weighing the seized material. The first warehouse alone had already been said to contain more than 5,000 kilos, and the total estimate rose sharply after the second unit was searched.

The suspected haul would put the case among the largest cocaine seizures ever recorded in Spain if the final count confirms the initial estimate.
