Guardia Civil checkpoint at Algeciras port

Guardia Civil arrests two at Algeciras port over body-packed hashish

Guardia Civil officers have arrested two passengers at Algeciras port after separate checks uncovered hashish hidden inside their bodies, according to the force.

The arrests were made during routine control operations at the port, one of the main gateways between the Costa de la Luz and North Africa, where police maintain permanent checks on passengers and vehicles to combat drug trafficking.

Separate checks on passengers from Ceuta

The first intervention took place last week during an inspection of travellers arriving from Ceuta. Officers noticed one passenger behaving in an unusual way and invited him to undergo a radiological scan to rule out the internal concealment of drugs.

The scan confirmed the presence of foreign bodies consistent with drug packets, and he was arrested on suspicion of a public health offence.

The second case was detected this week by officers from the port’s Fiscal and Border Patrol. They stopped another passenger who also appeared nervous and was acting strangely, prompting a further voluntary scan.

That check also revealed drugs hidden inside the suspect’s body, leading to a second arrest.

More than 3kg seized

In total, officers seized 218 packets of resin hashish weighing 3.071 kilograms, with an estimated street value of €6,338, the Guardia Civil said.

Once police formalities were completed, both detainees, the drugs and other items relevant to the investigation were handed over to the competent judicial authority.

The Guardia Civil said it keeps permanent surveillance and screening teams in Algeciras port and other ports in the province to prevent drug trafficking and related crime.
