Lorry snags power cable on A-7 in Mijas, creating danger for drivers and residents

A snagged power cable on the A-7 in Mijas creates danger for drivers, residents and pedestrians

A lorry got tangled up in the overhead power lines near Mijas, on Tuesday morning 30th June. This left drivers exposed to the live cables and caused long tailbacks.

What happened near Calahonda on the A-7?

Members of the public called emergency services at 8.20am following a collision between a lorry and overhead cables near km 1022 in the direction of Marbella, near Calahonda. The downed cable is believed to have affected four vehicles, forcing drivers to suddenly stop close to the live wires on the carriageway.

The right-hand lane and the left-hand lane were both closed at the scene. This caused massive traffic congestion that stretched up to 4 km from the first Mijas intersection. Commuters had to wait for hours during the morning rush because they were unable to safely pass through the danger zone.

Risk to nearby residents and drivers

Drivers and anyone trying to help stranded cars or others in the vicinity are at risk of electrocution if live overhead cables fall onto a motorway. Residents of the surrounding area also faced disruption, as the closure cut off a main route through Mijas in peak hours.

Guardia Civil agents, firefighters, Endesa technicians and others were present to secure the area. This was due to the potential danger of energized wires after such an accident. Despite the seriousness of the incident, there have been no reported injuries among the participants.

Emergency Response and Cleanup

Endesa employees worked to assess the damage and remove it. Traffic officers rerouted drivers and managed stranded cars. Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the collision between the lines and the lorry, or the length of time it will take to repair damaged power infrastructure.

Separate lorry incident near Marbella

A lorry tyre also blew out on the A-7 near kilometre 1045 in the direction of Marbella, but this time it was on the carriageway bound for Cadiz. The debris caused a 1.5-kilometre traffic jam in the right-hand lanes during rush hour.
