Next week, Spain may see snowfall as Arctic air lowers temperatures.

Forecasters have warned that a cold snap, with fresh snow, could occur next week in Spain after weeks of heavy rain, storms and unpredictable weather.
Weather models followed by meteorologists at Meteored suggest temperatures could plunge again from the middle of next week as a ‘nortada’ pushes colder air south across the country. Forecasts even indicate that snowfall could return to the Pyrenees mountains and other mountain ranges, despite Spain being in May.
Forecasts for the next few weeks are more likely to be like March than summer, which is disappointing to many who were looking forward to a warmer spring.
What is nortada? And why could it be affecting Spain next weekend?
The following are some of the ways to get in touch with each other nortada This weather pattern is caused by the cold winds that descend from Arctic regions to the Iberian Peninsula. It can cause sudden temperature drops in Spain, even late spring or early Summer.
Meteored believes that this weekend’s first cooler air may not be the end of the story.
Meteorologists have been closely monitoring the second possible influx, expected next week. This could produce a stronger cooling effect in large areas of the country.
Models suggest that the combination of an Atlantic high-pressure system and several low-pressure systems nearby could create a corridor allowing colder air from the south to reach Spain.
According to the forecasts, weather conditions are expected to be more volatile again starting on Wednesday. Meteored says that the temperature drops may be the greatest on Friday and the weekend following.
Some forecasts are already showing temperature anomalies approaching 15°C below normal in certain areas. This would be a significant change after the recent weeks of mild but unstable spring weather.
In the middle of May, snow could be returning to Spanish mountains
The forecast includes the possibility of new snow accumulation in mountainous regions.
Meteorologists predict that the combination between colder air and rainy weather could bring snow to parts of central and northern Spain.
Meteored says that during the first phase, the cold snap could bring between 5-10 centimetres fresh snow to the Pyrenees mountain ranges and central mountain ranges.
The forecasts for the weekend after next are even more dramatic. According to current projections, parts of the Pyrenees may receive up to 30 cm of snow if colder air develops as predicted.
Snow accumulations of up to 10 cm may occur in some areas of the Cantabrian Mountains. Snowfall in high mountain areas during May is not unheard of, but the timing feels odd after a few weeks when parts of Spain experienced storms, hail and sudden bursts to warm weather.
Many people are wondering if spring will ever arrive this year due to the constant fluctuations between cold and warm temperatures.
Colder weather could spread beyond Northern Spain
It is unlikely that the temperature drops will be limited to the North.
Forecasts suggest that colder weather could spread to the eastern and southern parts on mainland Spain by next weekend.
You may even notice the change on the Balearic Islands or in parts of the Canary Islands. Anyone already frustrated with Spain’s unpredictably unstable weather in spring could face another tough week.
In many parts of the nation, there have been weeks where temperatures and weather patterns fluctuated dramatically. Some regions have had little time to store winter clothing before they need them again.
Meteorologists continue to be cautious, because weather models have the potential to change significantly even several days before an event, particularly with this type atmospheric setup. Meteored warns that the forecasts will need to be monitored closely in the coming days in order to confirm the intensity of the nortada.
But if the current projections come true, Spain might soon face another sudden return to cold temperatures just when people thought spring temperatures would stabilize. Winter may still be lingering in mountainous areas.
