Almuñécar has activated a specialised mosquito monitoring and control programme to safeguard public health following recent heavy rainfall.
Environmental councillor Lucía González announced that the initiative is part of a broader West Nile Fever (WNF) surveillance plan, conducted in coordination with the expert firm Sanisur and supervised by regional health authorities.

Combination of biological and chemical interventions for high-risk areas
-
Citizens can report stagnant waters to the Town Hall by calling 958 6399 60.
The strategy began officially in February 2026. It focuses on stagnant waters where mosquito larvae can most easily proliferate.
By using both biological and chemical methods, the Town Hall aims to neutralise the breeding sites before summer’s peak. This proactive strategy is not only designed to prevent the spreading of diseases like West Nile, but also to reduce general nuisance caused to residents and tourists by insects.
The program will continue to be active through the summer of 2026 with increased efforts during high-activity periods.
The town hall also has a helpline that citizens can use to report possible breeding grounds in their neighborhood.
