Construction of an daring suspension bridge at Caminito del ReyThis 110 metre pedestrian hanging bridge is being built in the province of Malaga, but it’s causing some vertigo.
The workers are working at heights up to dozens of meters, with the help of a helicopter and zip lines that transport both personnel and cargo. The engineering feat takes place near the El Chorro Tunnel and the iron railway bridge at the end the current trail in Alora. The bridge will be suspended at a height of up to 50 meters above the gorge. This exciting alternative path offers visitors a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Great heights and massive challenges
Major adaptations were needed to meet the challenges of the terrain. Natural rock cracks required 8-metre perforations as well as increased cement injections. On the mountainside, geological studies identified unstable debris zones, prompting deeper six-metre piles, additional micropiles, and branched injections, as reported by the Malaga Provincial Council (Diputación de Málaga).

The project, funded by the Caminito‘s own revenues at a cost of approximately €1.5 million, includes not only the bridge but also 300 metres of new pathway, railings, fibre optic cabling, surveillance cameras, a control booth, forest management, plantings, and irrigation systems.
New Bridge Features
The walkway will have a metal grated floor, a 1.2 metre clear passage, steel cable railings and mesh, and weigh around 17 tonnes just for the deck, with a total weight of about 38 tonnes.
Francisco Salado, president of the Diputación, has explained that all works put maximum respect for the natural landscape and place safety first in designing platforms and paths.
Since the Caminito del Rey reopened in 2009, it has attracted 3,000,000 walkers and more than 140.000 additional visitors. It has quadrupled local accommodation establishments, doubled lodging capacity, created 658 jobs, and generated an annual economic impact of €64 million.
The official date of the bridge’s inauguration has not yet been announced, but it looks to be the most exciting part of the world-famous, iconic walkway.
