Thursday, 5th March 2026 at 16:52

The Andalusian Government will officially join the Montoro court proceedings regarding the Adamuz rail accident which killed 46 people.

This has been announced by the spokesperson of the Junta de Andalucía, Carolina España, who underlined the will of the government to accompany the victims throughout this process.

Last week, Huelva City Council, the province where most of the victims are from, announced that it would be participating in the proceedings.

What’s at stake in Adamuz crash trial investigation?

The stakes are high as the “working hypotheses” point to systemic failures, rather than human error.

  • The Fault Line: Investigators are focusing on a 40-centimetre break in a rail weld—work that was only completed in May 2025.

  • Allegations that the crash was covered up: Recent reports from the Guardia Civil suggest that important maintenance documents could have been “manipulated”.

  • Economic Isolation: Beyond the human tragedy, the “railway isolation” of Málaga – caused by the track closure and a subsequent landslide in Álora – is creating a reputational crisis for the province just as the Málaga Film Festival and Easter Week approach.

The Andalusian authorities have instructed their legal services to prepare a document requesting to join the proceeding, where the accident causes and if any responsibility is assigned will need to determined.

The file is being finalised in the coming days, but España announced on Wednesday that the Junta de Andalucía will appear “with complete certainty”.

The spokesperson, who stressed the Andalusian Government’s willingness support victims, insisted on the need to know the causes of the accident as soon as possible. “We demand the truth and we want to get to the end,” said España.

We have repeatedly said that we must stand with the victims and defend their rights. And we will. We will take the best course of action if it is the most favorable situation in the case,” she continued.

Although she didn’t specify a date, she said that the government is expected to approve this appearance and will do so shortly.

She also warned that the isolation of Malaga’s railway since the accident has caused the province to suffer. This is due, firstly, to the cutting of track on the site of accident, but also, because an embankment collapsed in the municipal of Alora.

Disconnection

Malaga is not isolated from Spain. She highlighted the economic and public relations damage the province has suffered as a result. The Malaga Film Festival, which is set to start soon, and the tourism industry are suffering cancellations leading up to Easter.

On Wednesday, the spokesman for the Grupo Popular in the Andalusian parliament, Toni Martín, explained that his party had prepared a non-legislative motion (PNL) to urge the Andalusian government to take part in the case, but it was ultimately agreed that it would be better for the initiative to come from them.
