On February 18, the Ruta del Sol (Vuelta Ciclista a Andalucia) launched its 72nd year from Benahavis in the mountains. The first stage began with the highest temperatures and most sunshine. The event, which draws international attention to Andalusia’s stunning landscapes, saw 119 cyclists from 17 teams set off on a challenging 150.1 km route to Pizarra, featuring nearly 2,800 metres of steep elevation gain with climbs like the Puerto del Madroño and Puerto de las Abejas.
Mayor José Antonio Mena of Benahavis, flanked by councillors Scott Marshall and Ignacio López, officiated the ribbon-cutting to start, making this a proud moment for the town. Mena said, “Great atmosphere to start this stage,” reflecting the electric vibe as riders pedaled along the town’s winding roads. The race will cover 803km across five provinces – Granada Cordoba Jaen Malaga Sevilla. There are also nine mountain passes.
The Benahavis stage started with a good turnout
Anna, a local resident, expressed her excitement about the event in a submission before the event. She noted the role of the local government in securing the start to the race, which would boost visibility and economic development for the town. Anna pointed to two key preparatory events: one at the Ayuntamiento featuring Mena, López, and race director Joaquín Cuevas, and a regional presentation at the Auditorio Edgar Neville with Junta de Andalucia and Diputación de Malaga officials. She praised the initiative as a “firm commitment to sport as a tool for economic development, tourism promotion, and international projection,” with the opening stage expected to invigorate Málaga’s local economy.
Top talent is attracted to the race, such as Red Bull-BORA hansgrohe and UAE Team Emirates, with Tim Wellens. Tom Pidcock, from Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, is hoping to take advantage of the steep terrain. Spectators gathered outside the cooking school at 10:00 a.m., cheering as the peloton departed, underscoring Benahavís’s growing status as a hub for major sporting events.
The Ruta del Sol this year not only highlights Andalusia’s natural and cultural beauty, but also its athletic prowess. As the cyclists tackle the undulating roads ahead, Benahavís celebrates a successful launch, with hopes of hosting more such spectacles in the future.
