Red weather warnings Continue to enforce coastal Portugal As well as Storm Kristin Brings violent winds, rough waters and snowfall one dead This can cause widespread disruption.
The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere, the weather authority in Portugal, warned that the storm could produce “waves of 7 to 8 meters high from the west/northwest. They may reach a maximum height 14 metres with a peak time of 16/18 second.”
Portugal: Red alert for rough seas
IPMA issued a warning of red for 28 January, due to extremely rough seas near the coasts:
- Braga
- Coimbra
- Aveiro
- Beja
- Leiria
- Lisbon
- Viana do Castelo
- Setúbal
- Faro
- Porto
Portugal: Snow and wind warnings for inland districts
Orange warnings for snowfall are in place for Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, and Castelo Branco.
One death in Portugal due to storm
A man was killed in the early hours on Tuesday morning, January 27th, after a large tree fell onto his vehicle in Povos (Vila Franca de Xira), north of Lisbon. The victim’s identity has not been confirmed.
According to the National Weather Service, by 6am more than 650 incidents were recorded across the country, with many of them involving trees that had fallen and structures that had collapsed. Portugal Resident.
Portugal is experiencing power cuts, transport disruptions and school closures.
Portugal Resident reports that power outages have affected parts of Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Leiria, Santarém, Abrantes, Peniche and Setúbal, with Portuguese media estimating that up to 855,000 homes may be without electricity.
Civil Protection authorities in Leiria have warned residents to stay home. The police then extended the warning to Coimbra.
Ferry services across the Tagus River to Cais do Sodré have been suspended, while a fallen tree has blocked the Setúbal–Lisbon rail line. Rail services on several routes are disrupted throughout the country.
Seixal is experiencing localised flooding that has caused road closures. Local reports claim that Figueira da Foz’s iconic ferriswheel collapsed as a result of strong winds.
Meteorologists are monitoring Storm Kristin, and they have reported that it is producing “destructive Hurricane-force winds”, after a stinging jet has formed. This was according to a post by Severe Weather Europe on X.
Advice for UK travelers heading to Portugal
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises British nationals travelling abroad to monitor local media, follow instructions from local authorities and allow extra time for journeys during severe weather.
UK travelers currently in Portugal or those who are due to travel there should:
- Before travelling, check flight, ferry and rail services with the operators directly.
- Follow the instructions of IPMA or local Civil Protection authorities
- Avoid areas near rivers, coasts, and flood zones when weather warnings are issued
- Make sure your travel insurance includes coverage for weather-related disruption
