Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a tennis ace from Argentina, exploded after a group of “ignorant alcoholics” targeted him during a five set thriller in Melbourne with abusive words and obscene gesticulations.
The Malaga born star was pushed beyond his limits in his Australian Open battle against American giant Reilly Opelka – however, his biggest fight wasn’t against the 6ft11in server – it was against a group boozed-up yobs who were in the audience.
Fokina is known to wear his heart on his sleeves. He was forced by a rowdy group of people who hurled abuse at him, and gave him even the middle finger, as he battled for a spot in the third-round.
Drama began in the second tie-break set when the hecklers – believed to be Americans – tried to get into the Spaniard’s head. When one fan began chanting, “USA! USA!Davidovich, furious, snapped back, “What’s your point about USA?
At the start of set four, the Spaniard broke down. He called the chair umpire in to intercede as the group continued its tirade.
Davidovich did not hold back in his speech after his epic victory of 3 hours 50 minutes.
He raged, “They were drunken idiots.” “We don’t know if the four were gambling or not. There are people who show respect and can cheer. But there are also four others who do not.
Davidovich was the winner despite the chaos. Davidovich overcame Opelka’s rocket serves, including 37 asces, to win 6-3 7-6 5-7 4-6 6-4.
“A guy that is three metres high and serves the first and second ball at 220kmh… There is little you can,” he said to Eurosport. “But I showed that they had to earn the right to beat me!”
Davidovich is now set to face Tommy Paul (19th seed), an American on Friday.
